There I was scrolling on Instagram, minding my own business, living my best life. A brand I follow pops up ah nice let’s see what they have to say. Oh, it’s a job advert. They are looking for an intern, good for them. Perfect for someone about to start uni I thought. BUT oh no no no, this brand had other ideas. I read on, ‘perfect for a recent graduate.’
I’m sorry, what was that hun?! Perfect for someone that has just worked their ass off for the last 3 or 4 years to get a well-paid job? Perfect for someone that has just left uni 30k in debt? Perfect for someone that has a degree, done a ton of internships over the last three years and now has the experience and skills to work full time on a decent salary? Is that what you meant hun as I was not getting that from your IG post.
Yes, we all know going to uni isn’t necessary going to secure you that great job earning big bucks. But, come on you are defo worth more than an unpaid intern. Good grief.
We have bills to pay the same as you hun, experience doesn’t pay the bills. Experience doesn’t put food on the table. Experience won’t put fuel in my car to help me get to your offices.
I truly believe it is just so brands can be like oooo we are hiring we are amazing, look at our company expanding. When really they are like how can we get a little extra help without having to actually pay for it. I know, INTERN!!!
Unpaid internships should not be a thing anymore. Not expecting mega bucks but come on guys, people have to live. And let’s face it what do we really learn in most internships? How to get coffee and how to organise a cupboard.
It got me thinking about when I was looking for jobs a few years ago. I went to uni as the job I wanted at the time would only hire someone with a degree. Ok, fine we will go to uni. Finished uni, changed my mind about the role I wanted (whoops), then looked for jobs in another area in that field……
Jobs want a degree, check got that, awesome, let’s go. Oh but now they want 10 years’ experience. Right, ok. Sooooo how the hell is that even possible.
Honestly, you couldn’t make this shit up. I have come across so many job adverts over the years, low salary but want someone with a bunch of experience. If I had all that experience I wouldn’t be happy working for minimum wage thanks hun.
I remember a few years ago I applied for a role I had experience in but for a luxury brand and they wanted luxury brand experience. Ummm WHAT!!! Give it to me then hun is it.
Also, do these companies not realise that someone has to be the one to give you experience in the first place. If everyone is asking for X amount of years’ experience how are we supposed to get them if no one freaking hires us to get said experience in the first god damn place. Am I supposed to magic some experience out of my arsehole. Our parents should start teaching us some skills when we are in the womb.
What even is this life……….
